Marija Cvijovic’s research is focussing on systems biology of aging and protein-folding diseases. To approach these problems her research group is developing highly specialized dynamic models complemented with experimental work. Goal is to understand mechanisms that lead to the formation of protein-folding diseases and relate biochemical cellular processes to healthy ageing and longevity. By pursuing these goals, important scientific information will be available to address key priorities for public health policy in the 21st century.

Alfonso Bueno-Orovio is using an integrative approach to cardiac electrophysiology research, combining clinical and experimental data, modelling and simulation, to investigate cardiac arrhythmias and possible therapeutic targets. Due to the multiscale nature of cardiac electrophysiology, computational models represent the perfect framework to augment and fully analyse experimental and clinical findings. In order to further advance our current understanding of heart function, our methodology is based on a synergistic clinical, experimental and computational approach, aiming to develop novel hypotheses, therapeutic targets, and technologies to improve risk identification under different disease conditions.

Jérome Bonnet is working in the field of synthetic biology, the rational design and construction of new biological systems and functions. Synthetic biology builds on lessons from mature engineering disciplines and on exponential improvements in enabling technologies like DNA sequencing and synthesis. His team is particularly interested in engineering genetic circuits allowing us to "program" cellular behavior, and to apply these tools to healthcare challenges, starting with diagnosis of disease. We aim at engineering bacterial biosensors, or "bactosensors" capable of detecting biomarkers of disease in clinical samples and to identfy pathological biomarkers signatures via biomolecular computation devices to perform early diagnosis of disease.

Tariq Enver’s research career has been principally concerned with understanding the mechanisms by which tissue and developmental stage specific gene expression is achieved and regulated with early work focusing on the regulation of the β-globin gene clusters. His current work deploys post-genomic technologies and mathematical modelling approaches to gain further insight into how blood stem cells are configured in molecular terms, the nature of the pathways involved in their cell fate decisions, and how these are corrupted by chimaeric transcription factors associated with human leukaemia.
